“How do I show up in ChatGPT?” is the question behind almost every other one in this library. There is no button for it and no one can promise a citation. But there is a clear path, and it is just the other guides put in order. Think of this as the playbook.
First, a reality check
You cannot guarantee an AI engine cites you, the same way you could never guarantee a number-one Google ranking. What you can do is remove every reason an engine would skip you, and give it every reason to choose you. That breaks into two halves: be readable, and be worth citing.
It also helps to know where ChatGPT gets its answers. When ChatGPT searches, it fetches live pages with its own crawlers and draws on a search index (it partners with Bing as well as using OpenAI’s own index), then writes an answer with a few cited sources. So “showing up” means being crawlable, being in the index, and being the clearest answer once you are there.
The readable half (technical)
If an engine cannot reach or parse your page, nothing else matters. Work through these in order:
- Let the crawlers in. Make sure your robots.txt allows the AI crawlers, including OpenAI’s
OAI-SearchBotandChatGPT-User. This is the single cheapest fix, and the most common own-goal. - Be readable without JavaScript. AI crawlers generally do not run JavaScript, so your key content has to be in the raw HTML. See crawler reachability.
- Get indexed, and stay fresh. Because ChatGPT leans on Bing’s index, a clean XML sitemap and IndexNow (which pushes changes to Bing fast) both help your pages get found. Keep your last-updated signals honest.
- Tell engines who you are. Add Organization and FAQ structured data so a machine can parse your identity, offer, and answers cleanly.
The worth-citing half (strategy)
Once you are readable, the contest is whether you are the best source to quote:
- Build authority. Be a credible, clearly attributed source. Real authors, original information, and linked proof. See authority and proof.
- Write so you can be quoted. Answer questions directly, keep passages self-contained, and back claims with specific numbers, quotes, and sources. See writing for extraction.
- Cover the real questions. Build pages around the actual questions your buyers ask, because engines fan one query into many. Breadth of genuinely useful answers gives you more ways to get pulled in.
Then measure and repeat
- Watch the trend. Put a simple measurement in place: a set of real buyer prompts you check across the engines over time. Look for whether your mentions, citations, and sentiment move as you ship improvements.
The bottom line
What is not on this list: tricks, markup hacks, or paying for placement. Google states there is no special markup that gets you into AI answers, and optimizing for AI search “is still SEO.” The path is unglamorous and durable: be reachable, be understandable, be trustworthy, be clear, and keep your content current. Do that, and you stop hoping to show up and start being the obvious thing to cite.
