How to show up in Microsoft Copilot

Copilot runs on Bing, so being in Bing's index is most of the battle, plus a free way to check if it's working.

Microsoft Copilot shows up in Windows, Edge, Bing, and Microsoft 365. For the web-search paths Microsoft has documented — M365 Copilot Chat and agents, plus Copilot Search in Bing — the answers run on one engine: Bing. Microsoft says it directly: when Copilot Chat searches the web, “Copilot generates a short query based on your prompt and sends it to Bing.” So the question “how do I show up in Copilot?” is mostly the question “am I in Bing’s index?”

Copilot cites, and Bing is the gate

Copilot Search “cites its sources prominently,” inline-links the passage it drew from, and gives users “a list of every link used to generate the curated answer.” Microsoft says it built the feature “with publishers and content owners in mind.” So a Copilot citation, like a Perplexity one, sends a reader to you.

Here is the practical difference from Google. Because these Copilot paths draw on Bing rather than Google, your Bing coverage matters as much as your Google coverage. Plenty of sites tune everything for Google and quietly neglect Bing. For the web-search paths Microsoft documents, Bing indexability is the lever you control.

What to do

  1. Get indexed by Bing. Do not block Bingbot, and do not noindex the pages you want cited; a page that is not in the index cannot be a source. Bing “respects all content owner preferences expressed through robots.txt and other supported control mechanisms,” so check that yours allow it. Submit your XML sitemap in Bing Webmaster Tools.
  2. Push changes with IndexNow. Microsoft recommends IndexNow to notify Bing “whenever content is added, updated, or removed,” so fresh pages get picked up fast instead of waiting for a recrawl.
  3. Structure content so it surfaces. Bing’s own guidance: “clear headings, tables, and FAQ sections help surface key information,” and you should support claims with “examples, data, and cited sources.”
  4. Keep it current. Microsoft notes that “regular updates help ensure AI systems reference the most current version” of your content.
  5. Build depth in your area. Bing says “deepening coverage in related areas can reinforce authority.” The same authority and proof signals apply.
  6. If you are local, register with Bing Places for Business so your address, hours, and contact details stay current and eligible for AI answers.

You can actually see if it is working

Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report that shows how your content is doing across “Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and select partner integrations.” It reports how many times you are cited, which URLs are referenced, and the “grounding queries” AI used to find you. It is free and comes straight from Microsoft, which makes it a good first measurement layer. For the wider view of tracking mentions and citations across engines, see measuring AI visibility.

Where to start

Confirm Bing can crawl and index the pages you care about, then add IndexNow so changes reach it quickly. Both show up in your Free Scan report’s crawler-access and freshness checks, which is the fastest way to catch a Bing-side gap you have been overlooking.
